The era consolidated a waveguide-centric paradigm, emphasizing propagation in lens-like and guiding media, and rigorous yet approximate methods for beam width, phase, and ray trajectories. It advanced understanding of off-axis aberrations and Gaussian-beam stability in refractive-index-graded media, enabling practical designs of compact beam-control components. In parallel, integrated optics and active beam control matured, with miniature laser-beam circuits and grating-couplers on thin films enabling multi-position deflection and digital control, foreshadowing later on-chip photonics. Material properties and loss mechanisms were studied in tandem to improve guided-wave performance in glasses and semiconductors.
